A memorial service for Verlin L. Allen of Heron Lake took place May 9 at the Osterberg-Hansen Funeral Home in Heron Lake with Father Russell Scepaniak officiating. Military honors were provided by the Herbert K. Kellam American Legion Post No. 224 of Heron Lake. Verlin Allen died May 4 at the Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom.
Verlin's grandchildren and great grandchildren were honorary casket bearers. Music was provided by grandson Derek's band, What Lies Within. The Osterberg-Hansen Funeral Service of Heron Lake handled the arrangements.
Verlin LeRoy Allen was born in Jackson on Feb. 14, 1923 the son of Marion and Gradys (Trublood) Allen. He attended Loon Lake Country School until eighth grade. He then joined his father farming. In January of 1943 he was drafted into the United States Army to serve in World War II. He was stationed with the 31st Infantry Division in the Pacific Islands of New Guineas and Philippines. Verlin was honorably discharged from service in January of 1946, he then returned to Jackson County to farm. He married Mary Babcock at the Methodist Church in Lakefield, on April 12, 1947. To this marriage they were blessed with two sons. Most of their married life they lived around the Jackson and Worthington areas, where they continued farming. They did enjoy traveling to the west coast together; they have seen every state west of the Mississippi River and some east of it as well. In September of 2011, Verlin moved into the Sogge Good Samaritan Home in Windom.
Verlin was a member of the Herbert K. Kellam American Legion Post No. 224 in Heron Lake for many years. He loved to piddle in his yard. He enjoyed mowing and flower gardening.
Verlin is survived by his wife of 65 years Mary of Heron Lake, his two sons Clifford (Barbara) of Sioux City, Iowa and Norman (Janet) of Heron Lake, three grandchildren Derek Allen (Melissa), Kevin Allen (Sharon), and Stacy Allen (Adam Olsen), and seven great grandchildren, Jordan, Carter, Miles, Jocelyn, Mckenzie, Rylie, and Trenton. He is also survived by two sisters Jean Springer of Hope Dale, Ohio and Peggy Crichfield of Forks, Wash., and seven half siblings Mavis Nickels of Toledo, Ore., Shirley Sterling of La Junta, Colo., Virgil Allen of Coos Bay, Ore., Verla Shaffer, Joyce Lewis, Ruby Barbie, and Keith Allen all of Grants Pass, Ore.
Verlin is preceded in death by his parents, and one brother Kenneth Allen.
