Both Robert and Mary were killed in a head-on collision near Welcome, Minnesota on their way to Lake field, northwest of Fairmount to visit Mary's father, Dr. Woods, two days before Thanksgiving. Both Robert and Mary were active in Fairmount community. he spearheaded the effort to renovate and save the Fairmount Opera House; Counselor of the United Methodist Church, High School Youth Fellowship; Active in the boy Scouts, the American Field Service student exchange program; Fairmount Chamber of Commerce; past member of the Fairmount School Board. Bob was the 1983 recipient of the Fairmount Exchange Club's Book of Golden Deeds Award for "recognition to a person who has given so much of himself in an unselfish manner to better the lives of others." Mary was also active in her church and in scouting, board member of the Martin County Library, American association of University Woman; Salvation Army, Lake view Health Care Center, Fairmount Opera House.
