Gerben was the son of Gerrit and Evelyn Buwalda Cuperus and was born in Holwerd, Friesland, Netherlands. His siblings include Annie Ebbinga, Burend Cuperus, John Cuperus, Katherine Olsem, and William Cuperus. Gerben moved with his family to the US on July 3, 1923. They made their home in Okabena then Lakefield before settling in Dundee, where Gerben grew up and attended school. He entered the Army on June 20, 1942 and served during WWII until his discharge on January 1, 1946. He returned to Dundee to farm with his family. He was united in marriage to Lois Tordsen on September 3, 1951 at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lakefield. After their marriage they lived and farmed in Wirock. In 1983 they retired and moved to Fulda.
Gerben was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Fulda. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, which he taught to his nieces and nephews, playing cards and visiting with his many friends and relatives.
