Melba Mae Martin Carney was born Jan. 1, 1914 in Jefferson, Green County, Iowa to Francis (Frank) Marion Martin and Myrtle Louise Jones Martin.
In 1923 her family moved to Walnut Grove then moved in 1927 near Lake Wilson where they farmed for seven years until moving to a farm south of Slayton in 1934.
She married Arthur (Art) Carney on Jan. 1, 1935. At the time of their marriage, Melba worked for the Corn Hog Program (predecessor to the Department of Agriculture). She farmed with Arthur on four rented farms from 1935 through 1940. In 1940 they purchased a farm north of Lake Wilson making it her home until 1999. Her diminishing health from that time on saw her in two hospitals, a short stay back in her home, assisted living, three nursing homes and Hospice of Murray County until her death at Edgebrook Care Center.
