Ida M. Larson, Long Time County Resident, Dies
Ida Mathilda Jacobson Larson was born on March 15, 1876 to John and Randina Jacobson at Red Wing, Minnesota and passed away at the home of her son, Raymond on January 20, 1960 at the age of 83 years, 10 months, and 5 days. Her death was due to the infirmities of old age.
Mrs. Larson grew to young womanhood in Red Wing, attending its schools and graduated from high school in 1896. She spent a few years teaching a rural school at Norcross. She then attended Teacher's College at Winona. Upon graduation she taught two years at Northfield after which she went to Red Wing where she became Principal of the Red Wing West Side Elementary School, which position she held until the time of her marriage.
While teaching in Northfield she stayed in the home of Dr. Schmidt who was then the Director of Music at St. Olaf College. This was a very enriching experience in her life as her friends, the Schmidts included her in church choirs and cantatas, and the tour of these groups brought her to various cities. She did much solo work.
During the years she spent in her home town of Red Wing, she was very active in all musical activities of her church serving as organist of the church's pipe organ.
On January 3, 1906 she was united in marriage to George F. Larson of North Ottowa Township. To this union four children were born. One daughter, Evalyn, Mrs. Charles E. Ellison Jr. of Elbow Lake, and three sons, Herbert, Norman, and Raymond all of Wendell, Minnesota.
They made their home on the farm in North Ottowa until 1938, when they retired to Wendell. Shortly after the death of her husband in 1942, Mrs. Larson moved back to the home farm and built a small home next to that of her son Herbert. During the last few years she lived with her children.
Mrs. Larson was active in Community affairs, having served as clerk of the local school district from shortly after her marriage until their retirement to Wendell. She was an ordained minister of the Church of God and served as pastor of the Hereford Church for many years, continuing to care for its affairs and its services.
In recent years Mrs. Larson had been failing in health, but was about the home and was always cheerful. Only about a week before her death did she begin to feel very tired and decided to remain in bed. She passed away quietly on Wednesday morning January 20.
She was preceded in death by her father, mother, husband George, and brother Edwin Jacobson.
Surviving besides her four children, are three sisters, Mrs. Albert Olson of Madison, Minnesota. Mrs. T. A. Dybdal of Wendell, Minnesota, Mrs. W. H. Freeman of Huntington Park, California, and one brother, Joseph Jacobson of Huntington Park, California. There are also surviving, 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
There was always a very high esteem for her, and her counsel was sought by many.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 24, at the Norcross _. U. B. Church. A family service was held in the morning, by Rev. Ray Johnson. Bruce Larson, a grandson, sang "God's Ways are Right Ways" accompanied by his sister Carol.
In the afternoon service conducted by Rev. Vern Schendel, Miss Virginia Larson, a granddaughter sang two solos, "Ivory Palaces" and "Beyond the Sunset," accompanied by Mrs. Hiram Ricks.
The pall bearers, grandsons of Mrs. Larson were: Eugene Ellison, Curtis Larson, Bruce Larson, Larry Larson, Lowell Ricks and a grand nephew, Charles Larson.
