Walter Barlau, age 83 of Sauk Centre, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, at St. Micahel's Nursing Home in Sauk Centre. Memorial services were on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre, with the Rev. Marty Porter Officiating. Interment was the Greenwood Cemetery in Sauk Centre. Walter Emil Barlau was born on Aug. 8, 1925 in Montrose to Otto and Martha (Lemke) Barlau. On June 17, 1951, he was united in marriage to LuVern Drawert in Howard Lake. They did dairy farming on their family farm for many years until retiring in 1978 and moving to a home on Rural Sauk Lake. Walter was a member of the NFO, the Lake Ida School Board and also served twelve years on the Woodland Township Board. Walter was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Winsted and served on the church board for three years. He was presently a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre. Hunting and fishing were some of Walter's favorite pastimes. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed seeing nature up close. During the winter months he kept busy meeting with his family and friends for cards. He especially enjoyed playing poker, black jack and hands and feet. Walter is survived by his children, Bradley (Michelle) Barlau of Rosemont, Kathy (Michael) Main of Howard Lake, Lori (Tom) Fletcher of Sauk Centre, Bruce (jane) Barlau of Albany; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lorena (Gerhard) Henning of Michigan and Lila (Benjamin) Quaas of Mayer; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by is parents; wife, LuVern; grnadson, Tanner Batrlau; brother, Hubert Barlau; and sister, Edna Mielke. Organist was Arlene Anderson and lunch was provided by the church women in the fellowship hall following the services.
