Earl Axtell, 40, shot and killed his wife, Florence, 35, in a barber shop here last night, and then fatally wounded himself with a small caliber revolver. He died at once. Axtell had operated the barber shop for about a year, but left when he and his wife separated about three weeks ago. Four children survive.
County officers said Axtell came back Wednesday and soon after his arrival he entered the barber shop and opened fire. His wife fell after the first shot. He then wounded himself, but seeing Mrs. Axtell's body move, he shot her again. He also shot himself the second time.
Since the separation of the couple, Mrs. Axtell had operated the barber shop as a beauty parlor. The eldest of the four children is 18 and the youngest is 10 years old.

Axtell took his regular barber's examination, November 12, passed it and was issued a license, according to records of the state barber board, Axtell was born at Carleton and was living there when he entered a barber school November 10, 1928. He graduated from the school May 6, 1929, and successfully passed his apprentice examination.
After that examination he worked as an apprentice in shops at Hastings and Omaha. On August 28, 1929, he and his wife purchased a shop at Clay Center and employed a licensed barber under whom he worked. Axtell is 40.
