Virginia C. Aarhus -- Hayfield
HAYFIELD -- The funeral Mass for Virginia C. Aarhus will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hayfield, with the Revs. William Kulas and Richard Dernek co-officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Hayfield.
Mrs. Aarhus, 93, died Monday (July 28, 2008) at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.
Virginia Catherine Mertz was born Feb. 17, 1915, in Rochester. She married Sterling Aarhus on Feb. 6, 1940, in Rochester. She was a homemaker and a cook at the Waltham School. A member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, she was active in various church activities, taught religion, and was in the Altar and Rosary societies. She also belonged to the Field Crest Auxiliary.
Mrs. Aarhus and her husband resided in Waltham before moving to Hayfield in 1974. She enjoyed going to their lake home in Lake City, and later in Faribault, Minn. In retirement, she and her husband enjoyed wintering in Arizona.
She is survived by two sons, Larry (Nancy) of Stewartville and Jim (Barb) of Hayfield; a daughter, LaVae (Tom) Kramer of Hayfield; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Orville Mertz of Rochester and Louis Mertz of Osage, Minn. She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1995; a sister, Leone Erdman; and two brothers, Melvin and Gordon Mertz.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Czaplewski Family Funeral Home in Hayfield, and an hour before the service Thursday at the church. There will be a Prayer service at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
