Fred Graba, 89, of Nimrod, Minnesota, dedicated father and grandfather, a man of many talents and loved very much died on September 14, 2008, at Lakewood Health System Nursing Home, in Staples, Minnesota.
Fred was born to George and Hannah (Hanson) Graba on January 27, 1919, in Meadow Township, Wadena County, Minnesota. Fred attended school in District 32, Meadow Township, in Wadena County. He served in the United States Army during World War II receiving an honorable discharge. Returning to the family farm he married Gladys Ostlund on August 27, 1950. Four children were born to this union.
In 1955 they moved to Babbitt, Minnesota, where he worked for Reserve Mining. In 1958 they returned to the farm by Nimrod. After surviving two cancer conditions, Fred still continued on with his hobbies including, visiting with friends, logging and working with horses, collecting and fixing engines and machinery. He was on the leading edge of collecting antiques, digging for old bottles, collecting and restoring old clocks, guns, and Model T and Model A Ford cars. Fred collected many stationary engines and early model tractors. Fred's last month and a half were spent at the Lakewood Health System Care Center in Staples.
Fred is survived by his wife Gladys Lucille Graba of Nimrod; daughter Lanet (Delbert) Huttunen of Pembina, North Dakota; sons Danny (Anne) Graba of Sebeka; Duane (Becky) Graba of Nimrod; sisters Irene Hilborn of Mesa, Arizona; Helen Ferenz of Eureka, California; Laura Bouzard of Santa Maria, California; Betty (Einer) Godo of Bellevue, Washington; and Arlene (Doug) Feazel of Tacoma, Washington; 16 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; son Jed Fred Graba who died of SIDS at nine months of age; brother Homer Carlson; three sisters, Bessie Westra, Bea Reber, and Lillian Knese; and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, Septembe 18, at Wevley Funeral Home in Sebeka and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 19, at Nimrod Lutheran Church with Pastor Raymond Hendrickson officiating. Lolita Myers will serve as organist. Ashley Christianson will sing a solo, "Amazing Grace." Congregational hymns will be "How Great Thou Art," "Amazing Grace" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" Berg Nyland American Legion Post 456 of Sebeka will provide military honors. Graveside inurnment will be at a later date. Arrangements were entrusted to Wevley Funeral Home, Sebeka.
