Mary Fern Heiller of Brownsville, Minn., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 8, 2010, with her family at her side.
Mary Fern Heiller was born August 15, 1918, in Sherwood, N.D., to Fred and Stella (Rishling) Schnick. Fern, as she was known, moved to Minnesota as a young adult. On June 20, 1942, she married Rona Heiller in California while he was serving in the U.S. Army. Eight Children were born to this union. On April 25, 1953, Rona passed away due to an illness he incurred while a prisoner of war. Fern was left to raise eight young children on her own. Her mother, Stella Schnick, also a recent widow, moved in upstairs from Fern and was a great help and a loving grandmother.
Fern developed a great love for the community of Brownsville, including the history of the town and co-authored a book on the subject. She also began and maintained for many years, a local collection of historical significance. Fern was also interested in the workings of a small town and was the first woman ever elected to serve on the Brownsville City Council. She also wrote the local news for several area newspapers. Fern was an artist and an author, particularly fond of writing poetry both because she loved it and as gifts for friends and family. She was a member of Zion Evangelical Church, Brownsville, all her adult life. She was also active in the local VFW Post Ladies Auxiliary and she served the community in so many ways.
Fern leaves behind her children, Sharon Stiegemeier, Glenn (Marilyn) Heiller, Kathy (Jim) Westberg, Mary Ellen Douglas, Jeanne (Tom Roster), and Danny (Lisa) Heiller; grandchildren, Henry (Debbie) Heiller, Max Stiegemeier, Jen Davis, Alex (Laura) Westberg, John Westberg, Peter (Amber) Douglas, Emily (Pete) Redondo, Adam (Kristen) Douglas, Brent (Grace) Roster, Brooke (Jeremy) Axberg, Michael Heiller, Sarah Heiller, Noah Heiller, and Malika Heiller; 11 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Fern was preceded in death by her sweet daughter, Lynette in 1969; her beloved son, David in 2007; and her brothers, Howard and Wilbur.
Memorial services will be Saturday, December 11, 2010, at 3:00 p.m., at Zion Evangelical Church, Brownsville. Pastor Brian Cuda will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery at a later date. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service. Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Homes and Crematory, Caledonia, is assisting the family with arrangements.
