Christian F. Bauman, one of Our Most Respected Citizens Passes Away Sunday Evening at Sioux Falls Hospital
The announcement that Mr. C. F. Bauman had passed away at the hospital in Sioux Falls last Sunday evening at 8:30 o'clock, caused a wave of sorrow to pass over the village and numerous expressions of regret were heard over the death of one of our leading citizens. The cause of Mr. Bauman's death was cancer of the pylori's and intestines. For several months past he has been in rather poor health and about two weeks ago, on the advice of local physicians, went to Sioux Falls where he underwent an operation for the correction of his ailment. While the operation was successfully performed it was found that the malady was so developed and seated that the best to be hooped for was but temporary relief, no hope being expressed for recovery. Mr. Bauman rallied in fine shape from the operation and for several days responded encouragingly to medical treatment. Last Friday a change was noted in his condition and from then until his death which occurred at 8:30 o'clock Sunday evening, his mother, who was at his bedside, and attending physicians realized that the coming of Death's messenger was a matter only of hours. Christian F. Bauman was born in Germany Sept. 26, 1853, and came to America with his parents in 1873. They located in Iowa County, Iowa, where they remained for five years when they removed to Benton County. Here Mr. Bauman grew to manhood. In the spring of 1888 he was married to Miss Lucy Phillips and the immediately came to Pipestone County where Mr. Bauman bought a farm two miles north of Jasper. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Bauman, three of whom, Robert, Rudolph and Frieda, are still living. Since coming to Pipestone County Mr. Bauman has identified himself with the public spirited element of his community and has been called upon many times to serve in positions of trust and responsibility, such as school and township offices. In 1900 he was elected county commissioner for this district, serving for four years. In the fall of 1908 he purchased a home in this village and moved his family to Jasper. A year ago he was elected a member of the village council, holding his membership in that body at the time of his death. He was possessed of the sterling qualities of manhood which won for him the esteem of all and to the invalid wife and three children this bereft of husband and father will the earnest sympathy of the community be extended. Funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon from the German Lutheran Church of which the deceased was a member, bay Rev. AmEnd assisted by Rev. W. Poehl, of Sioux Falls, and attended by a large number of friends. The remains were laid at rest in North Eden Cemetery.
