Matthew Duane Wilson, age 77, of Bemidji, Minn. died Monday, April 4, 2011 at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center, Bemidji, Minn.
Memorial Services will be 11:00 A.M., Thursday, April 7, 2011 at United Methodist Church, Bemidji, Minn. with Rev. Eric Hucke officiating. A Time to Share will be 4-7 P.M., Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home. Immediately following the service, lunch will be served at the Eckles Community Center. Arrangements were entrusted to the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bemidji, Minn.
Matt was born May 8, 1933 in Bemidji to George and Cecelia (Brennan) Wilson, the fourth of seven children. He graduated from Bemidji High School in 1952. Throughout his childhood, he enjoyed spending time with his grandparents on their farm in Eckles Township.
Matt married Donna Nutzman on January 31, 1953. In 58 years of marriage, they were blessed with four children, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
While in high school, Matt worked for Russell Creamery and the David Park Creamery. Some of his favorite stories included the delivery trucks for the creamery. After high school, Matt drove truck at the mines on the Iron Range.
In 1952, Matt began working for Naylor Electric as an apprentice electrician. He joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 294 and worked for many companies throughout the years as a journeyman electrician. He retired in 1995 from Hanson Electric. After retirement, Matt helped out at Hanson's in their shop; he truly enjoyed the time he spent with the Hanson's and their employees.
Matt and Donna moved to "the farm" in 1962. It was a wonderful place to raise a family, entertain friends and family, and always find something to keep busy with.
From 1985 to 1997, Matt and Donna made great friends and memories at Wilson's Resort and Campground on Whitefish Lake in Tenstrike.
Matt helped with the planning and construction of the Eckles Community Center. He continued to be active in supporting the center.
Matt was a fifty-five year member of the IBEW Local 294 and he was also a member of the Bemidji Moose Lodge.
Matt enjoyed spending time with his family, working on his many projects, attending auctions, and deer hunting and fishing. He loved spending time with his horses. Matt and Donna enjoyed many road trips after retirement with both family and friends.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Grimsley; parents; sister, Alice Wilson and brother, John Wilson.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Donna Wilson; son, Donald (Cherry) Wilson; daughters, Sara (Dan) Butler and Becky (Dan) Larson; son-in-law, Bob (Meg) Grimsley; 6 grandchildren, Cory (Jessica) Wilson, Micki (Michael) Alberts, Heidi Grimsley, Monica Butler, Patrick Butler and Elisabeth Larson; 3 great-grandchildren, Payton Alberts, Tyler Wilson and Mackenzie Wilson; brothers, Bill (Delphine) Wilson, Red (Darlene) Wilson, Sam (Letitia) Wilson and Jeff (DeLores) Wilson; sister-in-law, Shirley (John) Wilson.
