A Celebration of Life service for Russell Francis Elness was held Saturday morning, Dec. 15, 2007, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Lakefield, with Father Peter Schuster officiating. Interment was at Delafield Township Cemetery, Jackson County, Minn. Russell passed away at his home in Windom on Dec. 12, 2007.
Casket bearers were Roger Johnson, David Ourada, Tom Daub, Kyle Grams, Terry Ourada, Travis Bauer, Jim Knott and Chuck Daub. Honorary casket bearers were Perry (Carol) Ewert, Jim Flaming, Rodney Ring, Leon Dritz, Brandon Karban, Bill Johnson, Larry Majerus and Ramon Ring. Gift bearers were Jasmine, Halee and Jordin Elness, and Benjamin, Samantha and Andrew Ashland. Deb Rentchler was organist, Nicky Schumacker was vocalist/cantor and Deanne Hall was lector.
Russell Francis Elness was born on Oct. 28, 1939, in Windom, Minn., to Allen and Florence (Hewett) Elness. He was baptized at the American Lutheran Church in Windom and in 1960 was baptized into the Catholic faith in Jackson. He attended school in Windom and Jackson. Russell was united in marriage to Anita Ray on Sept. 10, 1960, in Jackson, Minn., at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church. After marriage, Russell worked for Johnson Livestock of Windom. In their 47 years of marriage, they resided on their farm southeast of Windom. In 1970, Russell started his own business, Elness Livestock and Trucking, a family business which today he operated with his wife, Anita, along with their son, Brian and his wife, Holly in Lakefield, Ivanhoe, Vesta and Winthrop.
Russell was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom. He also was active in the National Farmers Organization since the early 1960s. He was currently a member of the State NFO Meat Procurement board. He was a very dedicated husband, dad and grandpa. He loved to attend all of his grandchildren's activities and helped them in any way possible. He loved to go fishing, hunting and just spending time with his family, especially his beloved wife, Anita. Russell touched many lives and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Russell is survived by his wife, Anita of rural Windom; one son, Brian Elness and his wife, Holly and their children, Jasmine and her special friend, Brad Kutzbach, Halee and Jordin, all of Lakefield; one daughter, Penny Ashland and her husband, Jeff and their children, Benjamin, Samantha and Andrew of Spirit Lake, Iowa; sister-in-law, Betty Elness of Windom and her children, Jean Flatgard, Sandy Olson and Kelvin Elness and their families; sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Albert Dicks of Montevideo; brother-in-law, Donald Ray of Aurora; Janice Ray of Sherburn; and other relatives and friends.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Florence; brother, Curtis; and mother-in-law, Frances Tusa.
