Wilhelmina (Willy) Brouwer was born February 16, 1909 in Barneveld, Netherlands to Maas and Pellina T. (Verburgh) Van de Kieft. She was the oldest of ten children and together with her parents, three brothers and one sister they moved to America on January 1, 1919. They settled in Rock Valley, IA and in 1922 the family moved to the Chandler, MN area. Willy was Baptized and Confirmed at the Chandler Reformed Church and attended Country School.
On September 14, 1925 she married John Brouwer from Chandler and they had seven children. Willy helped with the farm and when they lived in Chandler, she did the bookkeeping for their trucking business, John Brouwer and Son Trucking. They made their home for a short time in Byron Center and Grand Rapids, both in Michigan, where she was a partner in the grocery business. Later when they moved back to the Chandler area she worked for Pete Krosschell Hatchery. After the death of her husband, she worked at the Bible Camp at Lake Okoboji, IA and LeMars College as head cook for approximately five years. She then moved to El Paso, TX to be near her daughter and worked at the Sun Towers Hospital as a dietary cook. She transferred to the El Paso Independent School District to become manager of a Junior High School Cafeteria until her retirement in 1971 She continued to work part-time until 1980 and did volunteer work with the Senior Citizens Centers.
On September 9, 1991 she moved back to Minnesota and entered the Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton, MN. Willy had been a lifelong member of the Chandler Reformed Church and active in its women group. She enjoyed cooking, baking, crocheting, fishing and ballroom dancing.
Willy is survived by her daughter, Arleen De Zeeuw of El Paso, TX; two sons, Albert of Hendersonville, NC and Marvin of Hadley, MN; 11 grandchildren 18 great-grandchildren; one great great grandchild; one brother, Bill of Pipestone, MN; four sisters, Marie Reimer, Eva Regeon, Pauline Van de Kieft and Tena Kleinjan all of Pipestone, MN; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Her parents, husband, one son, Wilbert, one infant son, two infant daughter, one daughter-in-law, and four brothers all preceded her in death.
