Sophie Jacobson Saatela, 85, of Virginia, formerly of Cook, Orr and Togo, passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2009, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Chisholm on October 18, 1923, the daughter of Matt and Mary (Kassarda) Grula. She grew up in Rauch and married Arthur Jacobson in 1941 and they lived in Togo and Rauch, where Art was a woodsman and farmer. Sophie later moved to Cook and worked at Hill Wood Products. She married Walter Saatela and they settled in Orr. After Walter's death she moved back to Cook into the Pioneer Apartment Building. Sophie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook. She was proud to be a Cook Timber Days Queen Candidate in her 70's. Sophie has resided at St. Michael's Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia for nearly a year.. Her family fondly recalls her great sense of humor, was a great cook an avid gardener. Bingo and casinos were her passion.
She is survived by 5 sons, Edward (Rose Thomas) Jacobson of Crystal, MN, Donald (Darlene) Jacobson – and "grand dog Otis" of Waterville, MN, Charles (Elizabeth) Jacobson of New Smyrna Beach, FL, Dennis (Linda) Jacobson of Blaine, MN, and Roger Jacobson of Orr; 1 sister, Anna Downum of San Jose, CA; 2 Grandsons, Robbie Steng and Michael Williams; 1 Granddaughter, Tiffany (Jeff) Donahue; 2 Great Grandchildren, along with nieces and other special relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Arthur Jacobson in 1978, 2nd husband, Walter Saatela; 1 brother, Steven Grula; and 1 sister, June Marchand.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Sunday (Oct. 4th) at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook. Rev. Reuben Rosnau will be the officiant. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Carpenter Cemetery, Carpenter Township of Itasca County. Arrangements are with the Mlaker Funeral Home of Cook.
