Virginia was one of eleven children born to Felixbena Medeiros and Manuel Gomes. She was born in the Hawaiian Islands and lived in the Oakland area until they moved to Merced County.
She married John Lopes, Jr. in 1934 and they lived in the Hilmar area for almost forty years until John's death.
Virginia married again in 1976 and is survived by her husband of thirty years, Curly Fliermans.
She has one living sister, Margie Porter of Sacramento, two brothers, Frank Gomes of Modesto and Joe Gomes of Marysville; five sons, James Lopes, Allen Lopes and John Lopes, Jr. of Hilmar and Tony Lopes and Richard Lopes of Turlock; fourteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
She was a member of Holy Rosary Church in Hilmar and later the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Modesto.
Virginia was a resilient woman who was a foster parent to several children for over ten years and raised five strong sons to manhood. She was proud of them and loved their company. She often said she cherished her time with family and loved Sunday dinners with Curly and whichever boys would stop by to share a meal.
She loved to knit, crochet, garden and cook.
Virginia freed her heart from hatred, lived simply, expected little and gave a lot. She led a full and happy life.
