Harry Dean Black, 94, longtime resort owner on Lake Osakis, died January 12, 2006 at Community Memorial Home in Osakis.
Harry was born June 22, 1911 in Melrose to Edward and Edith (Masteller) Black. He moved to Osakis as a youth and graduated from Osakis High School in 1930. On October 29, 1936 Harry married Hildegard Koch in Osakis. They lived in Little Falls while Harry worked as a wholesale grocery truck driver. In 1941, Harry and Hil purchased a resort on Lake Osakis and named it Black's Resort. They operated the resort for 30 years, retiring in 1971, although Harry still kept doing fishing guide service right through the fall of 2005.
Throughout his many years in business, Harry served on several boards, including the Osakis Country Club, where he was a charter member and he also served on the board of directors for the Alexandria Area Resort Association. He had belonged to the Osakis Lake Association, the Osakis Lion's Club and the Osakis Snowmobilers Club. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Osakis and belonged to the Knights of Columbus. Harry also enjoyed snowmobiling and hunting, especially with some local hunters for coyotes. He loved nature and being outdoors. After retiring, the Blacks spent several years wintering in Corpus Christi, Texas and many years wintering in Mexico where Harry enjoyed being able to go fishing every day.
Harry is survived by his wife of 69 years, Hil Black of Osakis; sister, Billie Mersfelder of Hayworth, CA; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Clifford, Robert and Dale Black; and sister, Mayola Vail.
Funeral services were held January 16 at Immaculate Conception Church in Osakis with Fr. Dick McGuire officiating. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in Osakis with the active pallbearers being his nephews, Ron Stadtherr, Jerry Koch, Levern and Bob Friedrichs, James and Bob Thiesen and the honorary bearers being Jim Tholen, Howard Berg, Syl Botzet, Kearney Frank, Darryl Mahlen, Jerry and Jim Kral and Bob Ferris.
