Birchdale Past & Present: John Bergvall immigrated with his parents to northern Minnesota in 1910 when he was only 6 months old. John & his mother Hilda first stayed in Warroad, MN where 3 of his father's brothers lived. They moved to Birchdale after his father, Alfred, had established a homestead & built a cabin.
John remembered his parents clearing land, cutting trees, piling, & burning. There were so many mosquitos that cheesecloth was used as canopies & veils for heads.
His mother Hilda passed away when he was only 8. At the time of her death, he was boarded out at the Olof Nelson home in Birchdale in order to attend school. He was brought home so his mother could see him before she died.
John graduated from high school in International Falls, MN in 1927. He then spent time in Milwaukee, WS & in the harvest fields of North Dakota. In 1934, he married Frances Buckman & they moved to Birchdale to begin farming with his father Alfred. They had 1 son, John Alfred, born in 1935.
John raised sheep, milked cows, sawed lumber, raised grass seed, & drove school bus for 25 years.
Frances died in 1978. In 1979, he took his son & 3 granddaughters to Sweden to visit relatives. In 1980, he married Florence Mai, a widow from Indus, MN with 7 children.
John was very active in the community: helping with the Birchdale Craft Center & Senior Citizens, Falls Senior Center, & Baudette Co-op. In November of 2000, John & Florence sold the farm & moved to International Falls. He died 2 weeks later & was laid to rest beside Frances in the Birchdale Cemetery.
