Leonard Shannon, age 90, of International Falls passed away peacefully at Falls Good Samaritan Society on July 31, 2011.
He was born Jan. 26, 1921 at Indus, Minnesota to Cornet and Eva Shannon. He grew up near Barwick, Ontario until he enlisted in the U.S. Army at the outbreak of World War II. He spent his active duty as a driver of the 99th Signal Battalion in the Pacific. Upon returning home he married former Kathleen Venne of Burriss, Ontario. After the war, Len went to work for Mando as a tinsmith and he established Shannon Sheet Metal.
Len's interests included playing cards, gardening, writing poems, casino trips, traveling, hunting, fishing, and square dancing. He was a well-known square dance caller and instructor on both sides of the border. Len and Kay's home was always a welcome place for family and friends to gather play cards and share food and good times. Len enjoyed cribbage until the time of his passing.
Len and Kay loved to support community events and activities in Birchdale, International Falls, and Salome, Ariz. Upon retirement, winters were spent in Arizona and traveling. Often they were joined by family members.
Survivors include wife, Kathleen; sons, Wayne (Idelle), Alton (Linda), and Paul (Rhea); daughter-in-law, Barb Shannon, and several sisters and brothers-in-law.
Len was preceded in death by daughter, Eva in 1985 and son Ken in 2011 as well as siblings, Ardeth Sekulich, Elwood Shannon, Lyla Hadley, Harvey Shannon, Pat Mathews, Fred Shannon, David Jensen, and several sister and brothers-in-law.
The family would prefer memorials to Falls Good Samaritan Society Building Fund.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, August 5th, 2011 at Green-Larsen Mortuary at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior.
