Memorial services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. today, Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, at United Congregational Church, Birchdale, Minn., for Ione Smart, age 93, who passed away Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Alterra Sterling House, Sauk Rapids.
The Rev. Rosanna Walker officiated.
Burial will take place at a later date at Birchdale Cemetery.
Ione was born Oct. 17, 1913, in Buffalo, Minn., to Rodney and Minnie (Sterling) Mills.
She received her education at a rural elementary school near Buffalo, graduated from Buffalo High School and the University of Minnesota with a degree in home economics.
She was employed at the Minnesota Home School for Girls in Sauk Centre after her college graduation and then for a WPA project in St. Cloud before moving to International Falls to work for the Koochiching County Welfare Department.
Ione married Myron Smart March 22, 1947. They resided near Birchdale, where they farmed and logged until retiring in 1977. After retirement they traveled to the Philippines, Thailand, Hawaii and Alaska. They purchased a retirement home in Apache Junction, Ariz., where they spent their winters golfing, swimming, hiking and visiting with their neighbors.
Summers were spent at Birchdale where Ione enjoyed her flowers and her favorite pastime of painting in oils and water colors.
After Myron's death in 1992, Ione traveled to Europe, the Virgin Islands, and throughout the eastern United States before moving to Taylors Falls, Minn., to be near her sister. She moved to Country Manor Apartments in Sartell, Minn., in 2000 to be close to her son and family. Failing health prompted a move to Alterra Sterling House in 2006.
Ione is survived by her son, Russell and his wife Janice of Sauk Rapids; two grandchildren, Ryan of Esko, Minn., and Michael of Los Angeles, Calif.; two nieces and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Myron, Dec. 22, 1992; one brother, Chester Mills; and one sister, Ardis Nygren.
Her family wishes to thank the staff at Alterra and St. Cloud Hospital Hospice Services for their care and support.
Memorials in Ione's memory may be made to the American Heart Association.
