Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Calexico for David V. Acuña, 79, of Calexico, who died Saturday in Calexico. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m.

Mass will be celebrated at noon Friday in Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Calexico with the Revs. Edmundo Zarate of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Barry Vinyard of Imperial Valley Catholic Chaplaincy officiating.

Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Calexico.

Mr. Acuña was born June 21, 1922, in Calexico, where he was raised and attended schools. He graduated from Calexico High School in 1941, where he played football and baseball. He was selected to All-Valley teams in both sports.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945.

When Mr. Acuña returned to the Valley in 1945, he started working for Imperial Hardware, where he remained until 1960.

He retired as a sergeant from the Calexico Police Department, where he served from 1960 to 1983.

After his retirement, Mr. Acuña worked for the U.S. Customs Service from 1980 to 1988.

Survivors include his children, David Acuña Jr., Guadalupe Acuña, Vicente Manuel Acuña, Dolores Lepe, Cecilia Leon and Esperanza Aguilar, all of Calexico, Luis Acuña, Frank Lizarraga and Elena Gomez, all of San Diego, Rafael Lizarraga of Temecula and Ynes Chew of San Diego; brothers, Joe, Ernie and Willie Acuña, all of Calexico, and Bobby Acuña of San Diego; sister, Tillie Aceves of San Diego; 29 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
