Axel and married Jessie Minnie Reese, daughter of Bert and Mary Reese, on April 10, 1912, at her parent’s home in Hoff Township, Pope County, Minnesota. They were married by Reverend B. E. Walters, the pastor of the Bethany Lutheran Church where Axel and his family were members. J. Ed Nelson and N. W. Nelson were witnesses.
Axel and Jessie had three children: Florence Marian Adeline (Steve Woodley), Violet Bernice Lucille (Joe Tholen, Stan Peterson, Sam Ewing), and Merlin Francis "Bud" (Doris).
After Axel passed away, Jessie met a traveling cook stove salesman who sold her a stove. Jessie married William H. Hancock on 21 Jun 1937. The marriage license had been issued in Pope County, and they were married in Kasson, Dodge County, Minnesota, on their way to Rochester.
Jessie died on 19 Jun 1938 at her parent's home in Glenwood, Minnesota from colon cancer. Jessie's funeral was held at the Methodist Church in Glenwood on 22 Jun 1938, with Rev. Clark and the Eastern Star of Villard conducting the service. Bryant's Thonatopsis was recited and "Nearer My God to Thee" was sung by the Eastern Star. The choir sang "Abide with Me" and "Rock of Ages." Mrs. Bickle, of the Glenwood Eastern Star, sang "In that City Four Square." She was buried next to Axel on 22 Jun 1938 in the Bethesda Covenant/Bethany Lutheran Cemetery in Blue Mounds Township, Pope County, Minnesota.
