Robert "Bob" Lagerquist, 71, of rural Aurora, formerly of Cook, passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2009, at the Virginia Convalescent Center.
He was born on December 9, 1937, at Hibbing; the son of Peter and Laura (Westling) Lagerquist. He grew up in Bear River and attended schools in Togo and Alango before graduating from High School in Grand Rapids. He enlisted in the Army, serving in Germany and stateside. He was united in marriage to Nancy Lee on December 9, 1961 in Cook. They lived in Minneapolis for four years prior to settling in Cook in 1967.
After his military duty he worked in road construction, for his brother George in a gas station, then for the village of Cook in 1968. In 1969 he began employment with the Minnesota Department of Transportation, retiring in 2001 as a senior equipment operator, after nearly 40 years of dedicated service. Earlier he was a Cook Volunteer Firefighter, drove ambulance and a member of the Cook Timberwolves Snowmobile Club. He enjoyed cutting firewood, fishing, farming, beaver trapping and puzzles. His greatest joy came from family, especially his grandchildren. He served on the Cook Cemetery Board and as a supervisor on the Owens Township Board. He moved to rural Aurora in 2006, and most recently been at the Virginia Convalescent Center. Bob's family wishes to thank the staff and nurses on the 4th floor of the Virginia Convalescent Center for their wonderful care given Bob during his stay there.
Bob is survived by his wife of nearly 48 years, Nancy of Aurora; son, Ted (Missy) Lagerquist of Aurora; one sister, Virginia Vinje of Minneapolis;, two grandchildren, Jacob and Kaleigh Lagerquist , and many other extended family members and loving friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and six brothers: Dick, Norman, George, Kenneth, Elmer and Bernard Lagerquist; five sisters: Inez Odella, Helen Michuad, Margaret Lagerquist (in infancy), Eleanor Mannisto and Agnes MacMullen.
Memorial services will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, Sept. 12th, at the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. Rev. Jeff Jones and Rev. Harris Youngquist will be the officiants. The soloist will be Rev. Jeff Jones, with Lorraine Walker providing the accompaniment. Military honors will be accorded by the combined Honors Guards of Cook Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1757 and the Orr American Legion Post #480. Interment will be in the Bearville Cemetery in Bearville Township of Itasca County.
