Selma H. Olson, 94, Togo, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at the Cook Nursing Home, with her family at her side.
Selma Hazel Silta was born in December 5, 1913, in Hibbing; the daughter of Finnish immigrants, Matti and Hanna (Kaatiala) Silta and grew up in Bearville Township. The family spoke only Finnish and at the age of seven she attended Togo School and learned to speak and write English, which she then taught to the family. She wanted to continue her education and went to live with the Powers family in Grand Rapids as a "mothers helper", which enabled her to finish High School in 1933. She later attended St. Cloud Teachers College. Selma was united in marriage to Richard Olson on February 23, 1935 and they made their home in Togo. Selma became the mother of twins and sixteen years later, another daughter. Selma was a partner and bookkeeper for their business, R. W. Olson Logging . She was a longtime confirmed member of Bear River Lutheran Church and was the secretary of their Ladies Aid and also served on the Togo PTA and the hot lunch program at Togo School. Selma was an avid reader and had a passion for learning. Her family fondly remembers her always proof reading the newspapers for mistakes. She loved traveling and especially enjoyed a trip with her sisters to Finland. Selma and Dick had met at a dance and in later years enjoyed dancing to Big Band music. She saved every card and gift that was given to her. It is through her gardening, love of fishing, carpentry skills, recycling and re-using, that her family retains fond memories of an unpretentious woman who led her life with independence, fortitude, "sisu" and a can-do/ make -do attitude. Selma was a devoted wife, cherished mother, and a loving grandmother. She had been making her residence at the Cook Nursing Home the past 4 ½ years.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 73 years, Richard; children, twins Richard Jr. (Beverly) Olson of Effie, and Darlene (Jake) Cayo of Virginia and Dana Anderson of Hibbing; a sister, Helen (Bud) Booth of Bigfork,; 10 Grandchildren: Teresa McCue, Kelly (Susan) McCue, Clayton (Ann) McCue, Susan (John) Mankus, Kim (Delaine) Olson, Kevin (Kelli) Olson, Todd (Holli) Olson, Matthew (Sheri Biondi) Anderson, Ryan (Nicole Polcher) Anderson and Kirk (Kacey Donahue) Anderson; 15 Great Grandchildren: Kelli Sue, Conor, Preston, Neil, Amber, Myles, Tessa, Heather, Justin, Laurin, McKenzi, Kaitlyn, Karter, Jonathan and Alex; 3 Great Great Grandchildren: Aleda, Trinity and Blaydon; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and many other extended family and friends.
Selma is preceded in death by 1 brother, John Silta; 1 sister, Mary Blackmer; 1 grandson in infancy, Lawrence McCue; 1 great grandson, Steven Olson, and son-in-law, Kenneth Anderson.
Memorial services were held at 1:00 PM Monday at the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook, with a gathering of family and friends one hour prior to the service. Rev. Melissa Stoller officiated with Gloria Hegg sharing. Pete Pellinen and Linda Freeman provided the music.
