Richard Newman, 74, Buck Lake, Minn., died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2006, in his home surrounded by his family after a two-year battle with cancer.
He was born in Minneapolis, Minn., to Ralph and Florence Newman. He married Doris Olson on July 17, 1954, in Nashwauk. He had worked as a shovel runner for Pacific Steel and Inland Steel, retiring after 32 years of service. He also had worked for Clusiau Brothers Logging and drove a gravel truck for Bob Snell.
He spent his free time doing wood burning, painting, working on vehicles and visiting with friends. He enjoyed the outdoors as a fisherman and deer hunter and loved to watch his children and grandchildren in the numerous sporting events they were involved in.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Doris; daughters Barb (Jim) Irving, Grand Rapids, Shelly (Paul) Kortekaas, Meadowlands, and Dahleen (Dolly) (Scott Bybee) Newman, Omaha, Neb.; sons Ronald (Amy) Newman and Tim (Deb) Newman, both of Hibbing; his brother, John Newman, Canyon, Minn.; his sister, Frances (Frank) Gustafson, Cloquet; grandchildren Krista, Michael, Brian, Sam, Carly, Korin, Alec and Brent; stepgrandchildren Beth and Dan; great-grandchildren Casey, Chazz, Audrey and Aries; and stepgreat-grandson Dominic.
Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, in the Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing, with Chaplain Dan Christ officiating.
Visitation: Will be from 10 a.m. until the funeral Saturday at the funeral home.
Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Burial: Bearville Cemetery, Bearville.
Arrangements are with Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
