Bernhard "Ben" Richard Samuel Niemi, 84, of Embarrass, died peacefully at his home on May 28, 2008.

Ben was born to Fannie Elizabeth (Pulkinen) Niemi and Richard Samuel Niemi on Jan. 30, 1924, in Waasa Township, Minn. He went to Waasa School #74 for six years and then to Embarrass School #70 through 11th grade. He received an honorary diploma from Babbitt High School in 2000.

Ben was a veteran of World War II, having been inducted into the Army Air Corps on June 10, 1943. He served as a sergeant and an aerial engineer gunner on a B-26 Marauder in Europe. He flew with the 495th Bomb Squadron in the 344th Bomb Group. Ben was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with two bronze battle stars, World War II Victory Medal and two overseas service bars. He was honorably discharged April 6, 1946, at Camp McCoy, Wis.

Ben married the love of his life, Ellen Joyce Malenius, on Oct. 1, 1955, at Zion Lutheran Church in Virginia. They made their home in Waasa Township for 53 years where they raised their two children, Richard Alec and Carol Sue. Ben worked at Erie Mining Company for 31 years from 1947 to 1978. He retired as an assistant general foreman. Ben then began to work as a substitute U.S. Postal Service carrier for many years.

Ben was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Embarrass. He was an active member of the Babbitt Maki-Pinola Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1539, the Babbitt American Legion Post 535 and the Kolstad Chapter 23 of Disabled American Veterans, Virginia. He was a state fire warden for over 43 years. Ben was a former member of the church council, the Waasa Township Board having served as a supervisor for many years and the Community Education Council. He also worked for Waasa Township as a cemetery sexton for many years.

Ben will be remembered by all who knew him for the love he had for his family and friends, his country, his Finnish heritage and nature. He adored his grandchildren.

Ben is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ellen Joyce (Malenius) Niemi; son, Richard; daughter, Carol (Tom) Sundberg; four grandchildren, Ashley and Benjamin Niemi; and Leighton and Ian Sundberg; brother, Arthur (Eva) Niemi; three sisters: Lillian Angelo, Martha Norha and Helen (Joe) Whiting; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ben was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Eleanor Pylka; and an infant brother and sister.

Burial will be in the Waasa Cemetery
