Obituary from the Fairbanks, Alaska, "Daily News-Miner" newspaper, dated Wednesday, March 17, 2010, page B-2:

Elsie May Alves passed away March 10, 2010, at 96 of natural causes. She was residing at Denali Center in Fairbanks at the time of her death. Born in New Bedford, Mass., on Dec. 29, 1913, she was the first daughter of a very large family.

Elsie married James Alves on March 16, 1947, in Rhode Island at 33. Jim had been living in Alaska and had returned to Massachusetts to visit family. They had been childhood sweethearts and rekindled their relationship. Because of limited housing, Elsie had to wait to come to Alaska. She arrived in Fairbanks on June 11, 1947, Jim's birthday. Elsie had never been any farther away from home than Boston. It was a great adventure for a city girl to come to Alaska. She fell in love with Alaska and made Fairbanks her home for the past 62 years.

Jim and Elsie raised three children and took in her brother Richard after their mother was killed in a hit and run accident. Elsie made many lifelong friends through her love and knowledge of her knitting and crocheting. She was an avid reader of romance novels, enjoyed collecting butterflies and Tom Selleck movies. She touched the hearts of many. She was generous, thoughtful, strong willed and a real lady to the very end. We will miss her smile.
Elsie was preceded in death by her mother and father, Isabel and Mathew Rogers; her husband, James Alves; and many brothers and sisters.

Elsie is survived by her sister, Genevieve Beirola of Rhode Island; brother, Richard Rogers of San Diego; daughter, Arlene Alves of Fairbanks and Arlene's daughter and family, Amiel and Jeff Accola and their children, Jaelynn, Ayden and Alyc Accola of Fairbanks; daughter, Elsie and Greg Woodhouse of Kingman, Ariz., and their daughters and families; daughter, Michelle and Wayne Rowe of Oroville, Calif., and their children, Ariel, Sarah, Greg, Mary, Christina and Isabeau Rowe; daughter, Kimberlee Shackelford of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and her sons, Keith and Perry Shackelford; and son, James Alves of San Diego and his daughters, Elizabeth and Katherine Alves.

The family wants to thank all the staff and volunteers at Denali Center for their love, consideration and compassion given to Elsie. They are true angels. Memorial contributions can be made to Denali Center in honor of Elsie Alves.

Arrangements were by Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home in Fairbanks and entombment will be at Northern Lights Memorial Park.
