Plane crash kills two

Two young men died in a crash of a light plane at the Willows Airport on Saturday night. The men were brothers-in-law.
Steven Charles Lederer, 31, and Gilbert Herman Benamati, 31, took off from the airport in a single engine Piper Cub and crashed moments later with extreme force not far from the main runway near the south end.
The Sheriff's office was called at 7:52 p.m. and emergency personnel and officers were dispatched. Lederer and Benamati were entangled in the wreckage of the plane and had to be extricated by the Willows Fire Department.
The plane was a Piper – Model PA-11 which was manufactured during the period of 1959 – 1962.
The names of the deceased were not released by the Sheriff's office until Monday morning after positive identification by the coroner.
Investigation into the cause of the crash will be conducted by the Federal Aviation Agency and the State Safety Board.
Steven C. Lederer was born in Willows June 15, 1953.
He is survived by his wife, Jane; two sons, Scott and Kristopher; and a daughter, Jill. He is also survived by his parents, Don and Carol Lederer of Willows, two sisters, Karen Randolph of Willows and Lynne Benamati of Chrome; one brother, Rick Lederer of Willows; paternal grandparents, Ernest and Vera Lederer of Willows; and his maternal grandmother, Velma Gillaspy of Willows.
He was a member of the Willows First Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Lynne of Chrome; father, Rudy Benamati, Jr., of Willows; mother, Anita Benamati of Chico; maternal grandparents, Herman and Marion Runge of Willows; and five brothers, David of Susanville, Guy of Sacramento, Wayne of Chico, Duane of Willows, and Warren, stationed in Monterey with the U.S. Navy.
