Merle Arnold passed away at Banner Lassen Medical Center with family by her side on Friday, June 25, 2010 at the age of 94. She was born on Feb. 11, 1916 in Dripping Springs, Ark. to Finis and Edna Cox.
Merle had been a resident of Lassen County for more than 60 years coming to Susanville with husband, Recil, where he was employed as a timber faller.
Merle had various jobs working for Spaulding Drug Store, Griffins Variety Store and Cobel's Stationary. She worked for the school district as a teacher's aide until her retirement in the mid-1990s.
She was an avid reader. Her favorites were Danielle Steele novels. She could never get enough of them. She loved to entertain family and friends with her wonderful meals, especially her fried chicken and homemade pies.
To all who had the privilege of knowing her, Merle was a living reminder of a bygone era. The passion and conviction she brought to every aspect of her life is a reflection of the enormous love she held for her family, friends, church, sorority sisters and community. Merle possessed an inexorable desire to bring her best to everything she did. She loved people and animals, and all were welcomed in her house.
Throughout her life, she was the epitome of strength and vitality, but in her last years her body began to fail her. Her mind, conversely, remained clear and sharp to the very end. She will be remembered for being a loving mother, and a woman of quiet strength and character.
Merle was preceded in death by her husband Recil; daughter Linda Kay Arnold; sister Marie Brown and brother Ward Cox.
She is survived by her children Ernie Arnold and Suzie Faulkner; sister Norma Jean Arnold and grandchildren JP Faulkner and Janis Bragg.
Memorial services will be held at the United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 14, 2010. A private burial will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to the American Cancer Society.
