He was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church and joined the Philadelphia conference in 1838 when he was 16 years old. He was a passionate patriot and an eloquent speaker. During the Civil War, while serving a church in Lebanon, Lebanon Co., Pennsylvania, he became Chaplain of the 14th Pennsylvania Infantry on April 30, 1861 and was discharged August 7, 1861. After his discharge he recieved permission from Hon. Simon Cameron to raise the 93rd Pennsylvania Infantry which became known as the "Lebanon Infantry." The regiment was mustered into service on October 28, 1861. He was wounded at Fair Oaks, VA on May 31, 1862 and during this battle he had two horses shot from under him. He resigned August 21, 1863 but the regiment served until June 27, 1865. As a minister he served churches in Smyrna, Kent Co., DE; Lancaster, Lancaster Co., PA; Philadelphia, PA; West Chester, Chester Co., PA; Reading, Berks Co., PA; Lebanon, Lebanon Co., PA and Preston, Caroline Co., MD. He died of paralysis.
