John ‘Jack' Edward Baxter
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Independence Cemetery for Independence native John "Jack" Edward Baxter.
Born on Aug. 12, 1932 in Independence to the late John and Mazie Baxter, John died peacefully at his home in Tallahassee, Fla. after a long illness. He was 72.
John attended the University of California, Berkeley before serving in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. After his discharge from Camp Pendleton, he graduated from Sacramento State College.
Accepting a graduate school scholarship to the University of Alabama, he graduated with a Masters Degree in Public Administration. John embarked on a long and rewarding career in city management including the cities of Thomaston and Thomasville, Ga. retiring after 12 years as city manager of Panama City, Fla. John loved his work and influenced the lives of many people. He greatly enjoyed visiting his birth place in the Owens Valley where he would trout fish and visit the mountains of his youth. He will be missed by all that knew him.
John is survived by his daughter, Marne Jane Brain; two grandchildren, Rachel Elizabeth and William David of Alpharetta, Ga.; brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Sharon and William and Kathryn; nieces Kat Tamayo and Meghan and Brenda Baxter; nephew, Curtis Baxter; and many friends in California, Florida and Georgia.
Donations can be made in John's name to the American Lung Association.
