Obituary from The Teton Valley News (Driggs, ID) - Thursday, July 19, 1956:
Charles Edwin Foster Bates, 55, passed away at the Teton Valley Hospital early Wednesday morning after a lingering illness.
He was born August 26, 1900 at Chapin, Idaho, a son of Stephen George Foster and Louisa Bates. When he was 1 1/2 years old his father died and his mother married Thomas G. Bates.
He has spent all of his life in Teton Valley except for a year following his marriage when they lived at Sunnydale. As a young man he attended grade school at Bates, Idaho, and later attended the Teton High School.
He was united in marriage to Ruth Sorensen in the Logan LDS Temple, May 19, 1939.
Beside his widow, he is survived by the following sons and daughters: Michael, Peter, Mary Lou, and Larry Lee, all of Driggs. His mother, Mrs. Louisa Bates, St. Anthony, also survives, and one brother, George Foster, Driggs, Idaho. The following half-brothers and sisters also survive: Mrs. Blanche Westerberg and Mrs. Luzon Munk, St. Anthony, Idaho, Mrs. Estella Buxton, Ernest Bates, and Henry Bates, Driggs, Idaho, Mrs. Emily Peck, Bremerton, Washington, and Mrs. Alice Farnsworth, Salt Lake City, Utah.
Mr. Bates has been an active member of the LDS Church all of his life and at the time of his death was a Seventy. He has always been a ward teacher, was scoutmaster for five years, and was a teacher in the Sunday School. For several years he was employed as a custodian and school bus driver for the Teton County School District, and also followed the carpenter trade.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:00 p.m. in the Driggs Second Ward LDS Chapel with Bishop Lynn Casper officiating. Interment will be in the Driggs Cemetery under the direction of the Hansen Funeral Home.
