Eugene born 10 May 1885 in Oakland died 29 Jan 1957 at the Hambey Ranch, Hall District, Monterey co., Married 26 Oct 1916 to Margaret Catherine Gunnels.
Gene had to quit school when he completed the ninth grade at Lake School to go to work to help support himself and his family. First on ranches for others, then with his brother-in-law William Atchison, in their farming endeavors. He worked on the hay baliers in the summers, beign the one to roll the bales out of the hay press, weigh them and tag them for their weight. On the threshers, eh was the one to drive the for or six horse teams to keep the machiens moving throught the fields. He was a skilled horseman, both in riding stock horses and driving 6,8 or more horse teams.
He also had inherited the ability needed for carpentry and was handy in all needed building. In 1933 he quite farming full time to accept a position with the road crew of supervisorial district #1 monterey county. He previously had worked for the county at times, when needed, to grade roads with graders drawn by horses, or to scrap out piled up sand on the road from the rains with fresnos drawn by horses. in 1935 he was promoted to road foreman of District #1 He continued in that positin until his retirement in 1922 at 70 years of age.
He and his wife, Margaret loved to hunt deer, They had many long time friends with whom they spent their weekends and vacations hunting during the deer seasons in Monterey County, the Sierras, and Nevada.
