Jay Gordon Ballard of Grass Valley, CA passed away at home on August 21, 2009 surrounded by family.
He was born July 14, 1933 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Jeanette Stoddard and Leland Bert Ballard, the fourth of five children.
He served our country in the US Air Force during the Korean War and later served in the Air Force Reserves.
He was a graduate of Sacramento State College and worked in the Health Care field for over 30 years, including The CA Dept. of Health and the CA Dept. of Forestry.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving. in his many callings with faith and devotion, including serving a mission with his wife Veda to the Spokane North Mission.
He will be remembered for his beautiful singing voice, notably for his Tenor solo at the semi-annual performance of "The Messiah" at the Sierra Presbyterian Church of Nevada City. He was a member of the Sacramento Opera Guild and sang for various public and private events. Music was his love. He took great pleasure in helping others feel closer to God through his singing.
He is survived by his wife Veda, his daughter Lisa (Chris) Strebel, his son Glen, step-son Jason (Amy) Merrill, grandchildren – Ryan (Sarah), Eric (Jessica), Andrew (Rebecca), Christa, Kara, Tyler, and Cody Strebel, and one great-grandson, Caden.
There will be a viewing at 10:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 615 Hollow Way, Nevada City, CA followed by the funeral services at 11:00 AM Saturday August 29, 2009. Family and friends are welcome. Interment will be at Greenwood Memorial Gardens in Grass Valley. Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper & Weaver Mortuary. His family appreciates the loving care he received from Hospice of the Foothills.
