Betty was preceded in death by her parents, brother Bobbie Jo Vermillion and sister Ila Vermillion Kunau.
She is survived by her son, James Floyd Adams and wife, Kathleen; daughter, Sara Elizabeth Adams and husband, Kenneth; grandson, Spencer Douglas Adams and wife, Heidi; granddaughter, Mallory Elizabeth Adams; brother, Richard Floyd Vermillion and wife, Sarah; sister, Kathryn Vermillion Browne; and sister-in-law, Bonnie Jo Vermillion.
Betty enjoyed travel, adventure, dancing, gardening, and playing games. She loved to laugh. She was a lifelong learner and devoted her career to children. A graduate of Oklahoma College for Women and of the University of Oklahoma, she was a special education teacher, then worked in special education administration. Betty often went the extra mile to advocate for underprivileged children and teens. She served on the Louisiana Governor’s Advisory Committee for the Education of Handicapped Children.
Betty was a treasured and exceptional mother and a devoted wife. She met and married William Tolbert Adams in Hahn, Germany. The family lived in Austin, Texas, then moved to Enid, Okla., where she enjoyed the Officers Wives Club at Vance Air Force Base and founded a pre-school called VanceLand.
Mama created “Camp Betty” for her grandchildren, which delighted them throughout their childhoods. She was an active member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary organization of women educators, and Quota Club, while living in Bossier City. After retiring, she moved to Edmond, Okla., and then to Dallas in 2003.
A graveside service was held in Chickasha, where Betty grew up.
