Shawn T. Barry, 21, went to his grandparents' side on Sunday, December 7, 2003. A resident of Vista Avenue, Wheeling, he was born on September 18, 1982 in Wheeling, the son of Daniel K. and Eleanor L. Bechtel Barry. He was a 2001 graduate of Wheeling Central Catholic High School. He joined the U.S. Navy in June 2001 serving as a Fire Control Technician stationed aboard the USS Laboon DDG 58 in Norfolk, VA. He was also a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Wheeling. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ed and Betty Barry, his maternal grandmother, Eleanor (Lally) Bechtel, and an uncle, David Hedger. Surviving in addition to his parents are three sisters, Jennifer L. Barry, Stephanie M. Barry, and Allison R. Barry all at home. His maternal grandfather, Joseph P. Bechtel; uncles and aunts, Bill and Theresa Barry, Ed and Joyce Rose, Judie Hedger, Sue Eberhard, Joe Bechtel, Tom Bechtel, Mark and Donna Kemp, Mitch and Beth Carp and Ed and Mary Jo McGinley, and numerous cousins. "If we cannot give him honor, while he's here to praise, then at least let's give him homage at the ending of his days. Perhaps just a simple headline in the paper might say, "OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING FOR A VETERAN DIED TODAY!" Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 2003 at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger St., Elm Grove, where a 4 p.m. vigil service will be held. Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Michael Catholic Church with the Rev. James Sobus as celebrant. Following Mass, a military graveside service with full honors will be held at Parkview Memorial Gardens, Wheeling. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
