George “Azzie” Azevedo, born January 22, 1917, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 98, on December 9, 2015 in Alturas, CA.
He was born to Antone and Mary Azevedo in Bakersfield, CA and was one of 22 children.
Before moving to Surprise Valley in 1955, he worked at the Port Hueneme base and in the oil fields as a rough neck.
George had an agriculture deferment during World War II. After arriving in Surprise Valley he worked on many area ranches. He was a fantastic mechanic and loved to tinker and repair just about anything.
George owned the Eagleville Garage and the Mobil Gas Station in Cedarville. He retired from the Modoc County Road Department in 1979 after 10 years of service to Modoc County.
George had a great passion for fishing and raising dogs and birds. He also had a great passion for Sangria, “Little Millers,” Garlic, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and driving down the middle of the road, as he felt he paid taxes for both sides.
George was a great storyteller. You never really quite knew if the stories were actually true or embellished.
He is survived by one sister Rose Souza, Oxnard, CA, and six sons, George “Pete” Azevedo, Carmel, CA; Gary Azevedo, Moss Landing; Gerald (Judy) Azevedo, Alturas; Russell (Cheryl) Azevedo, Cedarville; Kenneth (Marie) Azevedo, White City, OR and Dennis Azevedo, Gerber, CA.
George was blessed with 11 grandchildren, 16 great- grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his only daughter Georgiann Azevedo and three wives, Ardella, Cleo and Hazel.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Our lives have been enriched by his presence.
