Growing up in an agricultural community, Norm developed a keen aptitude for mechanical and electrical equipment coupled with a desire to improve farming practices. This led him to obtain a bachelor's degree in agricultural engineering from North Dakota State University in 1940. He continued his educational pursuits with a master's degree in agricultural engineering from the University of Idaho in 1942.
In 1947, Norm joined the agricultural engineering faculty at UC Davis. His academic research led to safer aerial chemical application. Throughout his long and respected tenure, Norm authored books, contributed numerous articles to professional journals, and took an active interest in supporting and promoting his many graduate students. His colleagues and friends will remember Norm for his leadership, his endless energy, a love of travel, and his never-ending interest in others.
Norman was preceded in death by his son, Thomas, his brother, Joseph, and sister, Barbara. His wife and life-long partner of 63 years, Margaret, died in December 2009. His family remembers his bright blue eyes, his ready smile, his generosity to all, and his thorough enjoyment of his long and well-lived life.
