Jun. 17, 2006 Richmond Contra Costa County California, USA
Our beloved and beautiful Claire passed away peacefully at her home on June 17, 2006 in the presence of family members and just short of her seventy-fourth birthday.
Born June 20, 1932 in Oakland to Pete and Juanita San Juan, Claire was raised in Berkeley and was a long-time resident of Richmond. She attended the City College of San Francisco and was later employed by the DuPont Co. She also joined the U.S. Naval Reserves and served with pride for four years. In the late 1940s, Claire met William Argonza of Vallejo. Their friendship resulted in their marriage in September 1954. They moved into their new home in Richmond in 1959, where they raised their family of three children.
With her countenance, captivating smile, and gracious attitude, Claire made friends and acquaintances easily, whether it was at a social gathering, a group travel tour, or a ballgame. Among Claire's greatest pleasures were spending time and special occasions with her family, and caring for her plants and herbs; she could hardly wait to plant her tulip bulbs each spring.
She became an avid fan of the Oakland A's, primarily as a result of her daughter taking her to her first ballgame. She also enjoyed her many vacations in Hawaii with her husband, and long walks on the beach in San Diego, where they purchased a vacation home following her retirement as an executive secretary for Chevron Research in Richmond. Claire also enjoyed dancing to disco and Big Band music.
As a volunteer for the Asthma Council of Marin, she contributed to the organization's newsletter on a regular basis. Claire will be remembered by her family and friends for her tremendous zest for life, her warmth and kindness to all of those around her, her active and creative mind, sense of humor, and her enormous determination and courage during her long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
Claire is survived by her devoted husband of fifty-one years, William; three loving children, Bill, Karen, and Steven; and three wonderful grandchildren, Christian, Derek, and Lauren. She also leaves behind her brother, Leonard, and sister, Gloria, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service for Claire at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 23, 2011 at the Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland. Published in the Contra Costa Times on June 21, 2006.
