ORLAND YOUTH KILLED IN AUTO RACE CRASH
Ramon De La Cruz, 23-year-old Orland youth, was almost instantly killed last Friday night in a pileup of hard-top racers at the Anderson track at the Shasta county fair grounds.
The crash occurred during the fourth lap of the 15-lap semi-final event of the first hard-top race to be held at the Shasta Speeday. De La Cruz's stripped down racer flipped over as he started into the west turn and rolled into the path of a car driven by Robert Benson of Chico. The crash, followed by a pileup of other races, was witnessed by 1400 spectators.
De La Crup, in his first hard-top race, was driving a 1938 Ford V-8, jointly owned by him and Herby Foley of Willows. He was in fourth position in the nine-car field when the crash occurred.
Following the accident the semi finals were re-started and won by Carl Joley of Red Bluff. Pete Peterson of Orland recaptured his unofficial title by winning the 25-lap main event. The hard tops will race again at the Chico Fair grounds next Sunday.
The Youth is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph De La Cruz of Orland; three sisters and one brother.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at ten at St. Dominic's Catholic church, with burial in the Catholic Cemetery. Rosary will be held at the Sweet Chapel Tuesday evening at eight.
