Requiem Mass for Emory W. Thiercof
Requiem mass was said by Msgr. Thomas J. Morahan Monday morning in St. Joseph's Church for Emory Walter Thiercof, 80, a lifelong resident of Los Banos, who died last Friday after an illness of several months.
Born in Los Banos October 16, 1881, Thiercof was a member of the first graduating class of the West Side Union High School here and was graduated from the University of California School of Pharmacy in 1904. He returned to Los Banos to serve his apprenticeship and then opened his own drug store which he operated until 1923, at which time he became manager of the Bank of America here. He retired from that position in 1946.
As a druggist in the 1918 flu epidemic he often worked around the clock dispensing medicines during those critical days.
Thiercof's parents were pioneers of the Los Banos area. His mother was the former Ellen Knight.
He was a member of the Los Banos Eagles for over 50 years, was an avid sports fan and served on the high school board of trustees.
In January, 1958, Thiercof and his wife, Lenore, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
The rosary was recited for Thiercof Sunday evening in the Whitehurst Chapel. Msgr. D. J. Keenan of Coalinga gave the sermon at the mass and Msgr. Thomas Ford of Gustine gave the committal service at Calvary Cemetery.
In addition to his widow, Thiercof is survived by six children, Mrs. Francis Prien of Kentfield, Marin County; William Emory Thiercof of Lakespur, Marin County; Mrs. Barbara Murry of Gustine; Joseph R. Thiercof of Los Banos; Sister Angela Louise of the College of Holy Names Order in Oakland; and Robert M. Thiercof of Los Banos; 15 grandchildren and six great grandchildren; a brother, Chesley of Los Angeles; two sisters, Mrs. Laura Duff of Vallejo, and Mrs. Jesse Jacobs of Menlo Park.
