Tommy R. Avila (1928-2010)
Tommy R. Avila went to be with the Lord on September 30, 2010 in Fresno California at the age of 82 after a short battle with cancer.
Tommy was 1 of 16 children born to Joe and Louise Avila of Hanford on February 18, 1928.
Tommy was a diversified farmer in Kings County for many years having raised crops of cotton, alfalfa, corn, onions, tomatoes, peaches and almonds. He loved animals and enjoyed raising sheep, brahmas, steers, buffalos and a donkey that was a family pet. Every year he grew a large garden of vegetables and sweet corn to share with family and friends. When time allowed he enjoyed getting away from the farm and spending time at the coast. Tommy served in the Korean War from 1950-1952 and was stationed in Germany. He was a member of the Central Valley Cooperative Cotton Gin and also a member of the board for 33 years having served the office of Vice President and was currently President for the last 24 years. He was also a member of the IDES Council #150. Tommy was a devoted parishioner at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church where he served as an usher for over 30 years. Tommy was a very loving and hard working man. He was an intelligent and knowledgeable person and was a mentor to many people over the years. He took pride in everything he did and was a man of never ending patience. His family best describes him as "One of a Kind."
Tommy is survived by his loving wife JoAnn of 56 years, two daughters, Patricia and her husband Joe Duarte of Hanford, Cindy and her husband Rodney Gagne of Lemoore, five grandchildren, twins Anthony & Matthew Duarte, James, Julie and Jason Rose, and two great-granddaughters Delaney Duarte and Mackenzie Rose. He is also survived by brothers George, Fernando, Paul and James Avila and sisters; Sr. Corinne Avila, Delores Garoogian, Lena Verdegaal, Josephine Sweet and numerous nieces and nephews.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents Joe and Louise Avila, brothers; Bro. Joe and Edward Avila, sisters; Ida Madruga, Louise Simas, Theresa Fagundes, Lucy Leal, Bernadette Bricco and a son-in-law, Stanley Rose.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, October 7, 2010 from 5 to 6 in the evening at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hanford with the recitation of the Rosary at 6:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be on Friday, October 8, 2010 at 1 p.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Calvary Cemetery in Hanford.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church Building Fund or to a charity of your choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of Whitehurst-McNamara Funeral Services Chapel in Hanford.
