James Frietes (Trites) perished with the sinking of the steamer Brother Jonathan off Crescent City, California. His body was later recovered and buried here.

DESCRIPTION OF BODIES FOUND AND BURIED
Jacksonville (Oregon), August 16th.--The following was received this evening by B. F. Dowell from R. Dugan, of Crescent City:
Through the politeness of our Coroner, J. E. Eldridge, I was permitted to take an abstract from his books of the names and descriptions of the bodies found and buried by him in the city burial grounds from the ill-fated Brother Jonathan to this date as follows:
...No. 16, a man supposed to be James E. Trites, from a telegraph dispatch found on his person from Samuel Wilder, Rochester, dated June 9th;
