He was the son of Joseph and Violet Halwig Adda. Joe was predeceased by his wife, Anna and a daughter, Christine. He is survived by a son, Joseph III; daughter, Joanne Lawrence; 2 grandchildren and 2 great-granddaughters.

Joe was primarily a farmer. He and Anna had been inducted into the Holcombe-Jimison Farmer Hall of Fame in June 2013. He had also been a fireman, railroad car letterer and sign painter for the Black River & Western Railroad and a school bus driver. Joe and his children performed with the Black River Gang and later in life, he played on DVR Radio's "Heartland Hayride".
