OGDEN - Our loving Dad, John W. Alexander, Sr (Jack), passed away on Sept. 12, 2010, with his daughter Darlene by his side. He was 94 years of age.
Jack was born June 12, 1916 in Coniston, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Jack was the third of 10 children born to William Stuart Alexander and Mabel Gladys Turner.
His family moved to the United States in 1923 when he was 7 years old, settling in Ogden, Utah. Jack became a citizen of the United States on Nov. 17, 1941 at the age of 25.
He married Hazel Rosella Smith on April 3rd, 1938. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on April 3rd , 2008, Hazel passed away on April, 28th, 2008. She was 85 years of age.
As a young man, he worked for Felt Auto Parts, Irwin Chevrolet, Wright's Department Store and Intermountain Neon Sign Co. In 1941 he hired on with AT&T (Mountain Bell). He retired in 1978 with 37 years of service.
He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, a good friend and neighbor, and a hard worker. He helped his family with construction of their homes and also helped friends with building, wiring, plumbing, concrete, wallpapering, painting, roofing and anything that was needed.
In 1995, Hazel suffered a debilitating stroke that left her dependent on Dad to care for her, which he did lovingly for 12-1/2 years. He kept her at home and with some help from his family and friends he took amazing care of her, never complaining.
The last 2-1/2 years have been a challenge for him, as he slowly lost his ability to see from Macular Degeneration. He had to depend more and more on help from others. He kept an amazing sense of humor through it all. He fought the good fight. He is now where he wants to be with his loving wife Hazel and his daughter Chris. He will be missed.
Jack was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on December 11, 1982 at the age of 66. He so enjoyed the home teachers who would visit and bring the sacrament to his home.
He is survived by one sister, Shirley Alexander, Sylmar, California; three daughters and two sons, Darlene Wood, Ogden, Utah, Jackie (Jim) Garner, Hooper, Utah, John (Annette) Alexander, Hyrum, Utah, David (Kaye) Alexander, South Ogden, Utah, and Colleen (Val) Read, Pleasant View, Utah; Gary Napper son-in-law, Riverdale, Utah; 17 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
