Thora was born to Frank Edwin Colton and Elizabeth Jane Hacking. She was the second wife of her Aunt Fern's husband Arzy Homer Mitchell and she raised her Aunt Fern's 6 children. Fern died in 1925 and Arzy and Thora were married on 24 August 1926.

DUCHESNE, December 16--Mrs. Thora Colton Mitchell, 47, wife of Sheriff Arzy H. Mitchell of Duchesne County, died Friday at 8 a.m. in a Salt Lake hospital of a lingering illness.

She was born at Vernal, July 19, 1902, a daughter of Frank Edwin and Elizabeth Hacking Colton. She attended Uintah County schools and was graduated from Uintah High School. She later attended the University of Utah and then taught at Maeser School, Vernal.

Her marriage to Mr. Mitchell was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, August 26, 1926,
