Keith Murdock Adams of Boring, Oregon passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2006 at the age of 80.
He was born June 30, 1925 in Parowan, Utah and was the eldest son of Orliando and Lacy Adams. He had six brothers and three sisters. In 1942 the family moved to Ogden, Utah.
Soon after the move, Keith quit school to join the Marines at the age of 17. He was a member of the 2nd Marine Division and 32 months of his three years in the Marines were spent in the Pacific, where he was involved in four major battles: Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian and Ikinawa. He was in the first group to occupy Nagasaki, Japan where the 2nd atomic bomb dropped.
Discharged in early 1946, he went back to Ogden to work at the Army Base. During this time he learned that Ogden High School had given him his diploma because he had already earned enough credits, so he enrolled at Utah State Agricultural College in Logan, Utah. After dropping out twice, he settled on a major in Elementery Education and earned his degree in 1951.
While in college Keith met Fay Fredrickson. After a two month courtship they were married on May 29, 1948 in Corinne, Utah. They had four children, two daugters and two sons.
In 1951 Keith and Fay moved to Portland, Oregon, where he was the first man hired to teach primary children for the city. After a short time he was recalled to duty for the Army and spent 17 months in Virginia during the Korean War.
After his Army days he moved back to Portland and resumed teaching. In 1956 he received his Master Degree from Oregon College of Education. For 33 years Keith worked for the Portland School District as a teacher, consultant and principle. He loved teaching and all the students he taught. During summers he worked at Jantzen Beach Amusement Park, where many of his students would visit him.
Following retirement in 1984 he and his wife tended to grandchildren and many animals on their acreage in Boring, Oregon. In addition they found time to travel. They have visited every state in the U.S., every territory and province in Canada (excluding the new one), and part of Mexico.
Keith is survived by his wife, Fay, and three children: Linda Chapell, Charlie Adams, and Christ Adams, eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and his siblings: Maureen, John, Thofa, Douglas, Allan, Orland, Jerry and Jeanine.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Rex, and a daughter who died at birth.
It is very hard to express in words what a wonderful person we have lost. He will be missed and forever in our hearts. In Keith's own words "It has been a great life."
Interment in the Corinne City Cemetery, Corinne, Utah.
