Rufus L. Akin was a Union Soldier in Unassigned 5th Minnesota Infantry.

He was the son of James Akin and Catherine Wheeler.

He was the husband of Nancy Jane (Hatfield) Akin (1849-1932).

HEART ATTACK KILLS VETERAN.

Rufus L. Akin, 84, Civil war veteran, died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.L. Bass, E1412 North. He had been a resident of Spokane 30 years. Heart trouble was the cause of death.
Mr. Akin was a native of Wisconsin. As a young man he made his home at Sauk Center, Minn. When war was declared, he enlisted in the Fifth Minnesota regiment. Since living in Spokane he had been active in affairs of the Sedgwick post. In 1880 Mr. Akin moved to The Dalles, Ore., and nine years later came to Spokane. He was a carpenter by trade. For 10 years he acted as a stationary engineer for the Northern Pacific railway.
Surviving are his widow, Nancy Jane; two sons, Milton of Portland, and Charles of Newman Lake; three daughters, Mr. A.J. Walkup, of Burlingame, Cal.; Mrs. C.A. Eseke and Mrs. Bass, Spokane.
The body is at the Hazen & Jaeger Funeral Home.
