ABRAMS LIVED UNDER CRUELTY__________Spokane Man Who Died This Week Was Born in Despotic Russia__________Cruelties of czarism under the old rulers of Russia were well known through first hand knowledge by Michael Abrams, who died here this week at the age of 99.When Mr. Abrams was born, Hebrew children in Russia, under orders of the crown, were compelled to go at the age of six to some Russian family for training until they reached the age of 21.On reaching 21, the young men were taken from the family which reared them and were required to serve 25 years with the military forces of Czar Nicholas I.At the time Mr. Abrams reached six, authorities were seeking him to place him with some Russian family but friends spirited him across the line into Rumania, where he remained until 30 years ago, when he came to America. His flight saved him from years of hardships.Funeral services for Mr. Abrams were held yesterday and the body laid to rest in Mount Nebo Cemetery. The photograph of Mr. Abrams, which appears here, was taken about 15 or 20 years ago in New York. Mr. Abrams, friends said, was active and happy almost to the day of his death.—From the Spokane Daily Chronicle; Thursday, September 1, 1927
