One of Lincoln County's first Pioneers of the Sprague country
He left his birth place when 18 years of age, came to CA during the gold excitement of 49' and first came to the Sprague country in 1870, at which time he settled on Crab Creek above the Pioneer Picnic grounds. He remained in this location until 77 when he moved to the neighborhood where he lived at his death. His has been a continuous residence in this vicinity for 39 years. It is doubtful if there is a man here now who came ahead of him. He increased his holdings from time to time until his possessions are commonly put at nearly 9,000 acres of Adams and Whitman County land and 1,280 acres in Alberta. His pasture contains 11 ½ sections and he raised many cattle and horses each year. He died at Calgary, Alberta 4th Nov where he had gone on business. He contracted a cold which developed into pneumonia with fatal results. The body was brought to Edwall Sunday by his nephew and the funeral services and burial were held there on that day. Quite a number from here attended the funeral in spite of the bad roads. His estate is worth approximately $100,000. He is survived by 3 brothers Richard, James and George all of whom live in his native town New Albany, IN, 3 sisters Mrs. P. Wood of the Okanogan country; Mrs. Keeler of Eureka, CA and Mrs. Martha Gard of Denver, CO. and numerous other relatives survive him. He was a man of stern principal, iron will and might constitution. No task was too hard for him, no sacrifice too great to make to gain his desired object. He discharged his obligations religiously and his word was as good as his bond. He practiced charity in an unostentatious manner and did good deeds which are known only to individuals. He was a life long bachelor. His was a familiar figure in the community. Every one who has lived here any length of time knew of him. His energetic nature would countenance no cessation of labor and he died in the midst of his activities. His country home was splendidly improved, all buildings being first class.
